So what do you do? Internal Comms? Oh IC!

Is it me or are we slowly but surely beginning to shake off the cumbersome 'Internal Communication' moniker/shackles, instead plumping for the snappy, ADD-friendly soundbyte, 'IC'?

I hope so. Sure, it's going to take a while for this trendy acronym to lounge comfortably in the VIP room next to its PR cousin, but at least this way, when you're at a social gathering and someone asks you what you do, you won't have to immediately reach for the nearest flip chart.

In-ter-nal Comm-u-nic-a-tion, you explain. That's 8 long syllables - which by any reasonable reckoning is 6 too many. By the time you've finished saying the words it's next Tuesday and everyone's left.

"So Jackie, tell me, what do you do?"
"I work in internal communication".
"Oh. I am sorry, I appear to  have finished my drink, do excuse me."

Instead, imagine the thrill of whispering over your Sauv Blanc that you work in 'IC'. What the?! What is this mysterious and exciting job title?! asks the canape-munching layman. Does it perchance involve international espionage?! Miniture recording devices used to infiltrate evil empires? High paced bare knuckle fist fights with angry robotmen in shiny grey suits?!

"Why yes! All of the above!"

Ditch the flip chart, toss the laminated Q3 Comms strategy aside and smile. Mines a martini.

A word of warning though, some party goers will mishear you and suddenly you'll be mistaken for the Head of Information Technology. In which case, get your coat.

Et tu, Charlotte? And here I was thinking that it's the internal comms folks who should be rallying against the creation of acronyms every chance they get. For my money, IC comes too close to ICK. Nothing trendy 'bout that;-)

Good point DB,

Thanx 4 UR gr8 pst.

(I jest of course, although I do wonder whether the chatroom generation will ever grasp the tricky apostrophe placement in you're / your if they believe it to be spelt UR) Don't get me started on the use of x.

No grammar and massively over-developed thumbs, I blame MTV (Music Television) ;)
